Marion Crawley

Marion Crawley graduated from Greencastle High School in 1926.

A star athlete in high school, he went on to play football and

basketball at DePauw University.  Crawley lettered three years in

basketball and two years in football, including a school record

95-yard kick off return for a touchdown.  After graduating from

DePauw in 1930, he played semi-pro football for one year in

Muncie before entering the coaching profession.  Crawley coached

football and basketball at Greencastle High School until 1938.

In the fall of 1938, he took over the head coaching duties for the

Hatchet football, basketball and baseball teams.  During his four-year tenure at WHS, the basketball team went 94-22 (.810) and won back-to-back state championships in 1941 and 1942.

Lafayette Jefferson lured Crawley away from WHS in the summer of 1942.  While at Jefferson, he won two more state basketball titles (1948 and 1964) and was state runner-up three times.  His 1950 football team won the mythical state championship.  Crawley was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1985 and the DePauw Hall of Fame in 1986.  Crawley’s basketball teams won an amazing 644 games over 32 seasons, an average of over 20 wins per year.  He was the first Executive Director of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Marion Crawley was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1964 and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
